Hotel Bedding Thread Count Explained: 160TC vs 210TC vs 300TC

March 2026 · 7 min read · SYG Hospitality

Thread count is one of the most misunderstood specifications in hotel procurement. Consumer marketing has conditioned buyers to believe that higher always means better — but in hospitality, the truth is more nuanced. The right thread count for a hotel depends on the property tier, the laundering environment, and the balance between guest experience and cost-per-use.

This guide cuts through the marketing noise with a practical breakdown of the thread counts actually used in European hotels — 160TC, 210TC (percale and satin), and 300TC — with a recommendation table at the end.

What does thread count actually mean?

Thread count (TC) is the number of threads woven per square inch of fabric — counting both horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads. A 200TC fabric has 100 warp threads and 100 weft threads per square inch.

The consumer myth: higher TC always means softer, more luxurious sheets. The reality: above approximately 300TC, the relationship between thread count and quality breaks down. Manufacturers achieve very high thread counts (600TC, 1000TC) by using multi-ply twisted threads or low-quality short-fibre cotton — producing sheets that are actually worse than well-made 200TC percale.

For hotel procurement, the relevant range is 160TC to 300TC. Beyond that, you are paying for a marketing number, not better linen.

160TC: the workhorse of hotel housekeeping

160TC percale is a single-ply plain weave using thicker, more durable yarns. The resulting fabric is lighter, crisper and more breathable than higher thread counts — and considerably more durable under the high-temperature industrial laundering that hotel operations require.

Best for: 2–3 star hotels, budget properties, aparthotels with self-service laundry, student accommodation, high-turnover properties where replacement frequency is a key cost driver.

Key advantages: Lowest cost per unit, dries fastest (energy saving), survives aggressive laundering cycles, easy to iron crisp. Light, breathable feel suitable for warm climates or properties without air conditioning.

210TC: the hospitality industry standard

210TC is the most-ordered thread count across European mid-market hotels. It offers a noticeably softer hand-feel than 160TC while remaining very manageable in commercial laundry environments. The slightly higher thread density gives a smoother surface that photographs better and gives a more polished appearance on the bed.

Best for: 3–4 star hotels, B&Bs, boutique properties. The standard specification for the majority of European mid-market hotels.

300TC: for luxury and boutique properties

300TC 100% cotton plain satin is the appropriate specification for 4–5 star hotels, luxury boutique properties and serviced apartments positioning on genuine quality. The higher thread count produces a denser, heavier, softer fabric with a more pronounced sheen and a hand-feel that is perceptibly more luxurious than 210TC options.

Best for: 4–5 star hotels, luxury boutique properties, premium serviced apartments, properties where bed linen is a stated brand differentiator.
